BRAIN TEASER #2 - NOW ANSWERED!
« on: July 12, 2005, 03:31:56 AM »
This is not exactly the difficult brain teaser that I will like to put, but bear with me.  Until I get a good 30 mins to dedicate to one, please make do with what I have :) :
Beginning: (This is fictional! This is just as it is and does not suggest a true representation of reality)
So it was the year 2312 and the world\'s population was 9.6 billion.  Unfortunately, the cure for GBABATIM, a newly discovered menacing disease, has not been found and it was unfortunately taking it\'s toll on some nations threatening to reduce the population drastically.

Well, one day a 71-year old woman (who studied Physics) claimed truthfully that she now knows the cure for the disease.  Unfortunately, as she was about to give a presentation on this idea of hers, she suddenly became dumb and to worsen things, she couldn\'t write either (these are uncurable).  She didn\'t have any scratch work or jot of her thought before this sad incidence happened.  Here is your task: How do you get the answer to the cure for GBABATIM from her, and what is this cure?
Hint: Only a 17-year old genius in MIT (Massachussetts Institute of Technology) was able to get the answer. Prior to that, experts in the medical field still couldn\'t get the cure from the old lady...in fact, they believed that it has been proven authoritatively that the disease has no cure + they had a point, but didn\'t put EVERYTHING into their equations.
Have fun answering this!  {Oh in case you were thinking of saying this, God\'s miraculous cure is not an option}

This one looks way beyond me but being the me that I am, I\'m just gonna give it a shot just so I can say I tried.
Answers
1. Get the answer for the cure from the 17-year old genius who knew it.
2. If the medical experts had a point for claiming authoritatively that the disease has no cure, then the cure is non-exsitent.

...my 2 cents...

Wrong Chizi.    The 17-year old genius will not give the answer.  As a further restriction on this brain teaser, you can still eliminate the 17-year old and somehow still be able to get the answer.  The only thing the old lady can do is nod her head...she can\'t even move her legs, in fact, her torso to be complete

@Fagin, yes she can still see. The only things wrong with her is that she can only move her head around her neck. Her legs, hands are not movable.  Remember that she is 71 years old

Since she\'s dumb, they could call a person who knows sign language and she can translate whatever the old mama says.

...but she cannot make signs unless with the nodding of her head which is basically not enough, or is it?

The answer (cure) is DEATH.  You can easily get the answer from the lady by asking her these sequence of questions:
(1) Is the cure a 1-letter word, 2-letter word etc until she nods her head in approval. Then
(2) Is the letter for the first word an \"A\", a \"B\" etc?  Progressing in that manner, you can spell out the word she had in mind before becoming dumb

Of course, you can reduce the number of questioning drastically by using a binary search kind of method i.e. Is the word greater than 5-letter or less etc.  Anyway, the Daddy (James Bond) has written 8)  Peace folks.
