The Archdiocese of Boston will pay an undisclosed sum of money to settle one of the most shocking cases to stem from the clergy sexual abuse scandal that erupted two years ago, lawyers said on Thursday.
The church said it had reached a settlement in the case of the Rev. James D. Foley, who carried on a 13-year sexual relationship with Rita Perry, fathered two children with her and abandoned her as she was dying.
The story of passion and death emerged in December 2002, after a judge forced the church to turn over some 11,000 pages of internal personnel files as part of the widening scandal over abusive priests.
