The group in the House of Representatives moving for the impeachment of President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday released a list of 16 offences which included the President?s ?reckless disregard of the Supreme Court judgement? that local government council funds be released to Lagos State.

Also included in the list of charges released by the co-ordinator of the group, Hon. Bashir Nadabo, is Obasanjo?s alleged complicity in the lingering political crisis in Anambra State.
The group alleged that the President was an accomplice in the disturbance in which national security was threatened.
Nadabo, however, said the number of legislators in support of the impeachment move has risen to 184 and that more members are believed to be looking for him to append their signatures to the list.
But National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Ahmadu Alli, said the party is not bothered by the executive-legislative feud and described the impeachment threat as a \"storm in a tea cup.\"
Other charges reeled out by Nadabo against Obasanjo are :
? Extra-judicial spending;
? Falsification of the 2005 budget;
? Non-implementation of the budget and disregard of rule of law;
? Abuse of power
? Violation and misuse of section 305 of the 1999 Constitution (Section 305 deals with the declaration of State of Emergency under the miscellaneous provisions);
? Loan to Sao Tome and Principe as well as Ghana
? Violation of section 83(1)(2) of the Constitution (This section deals with management of contingency funds);
? Accomplice in the Anambra saga. This borders on the issue of security of the State and the nation in general;
? Obstruction by not providing the National Assembly with Ministry\'s books as Minister of Petroleum Resources;
? Accomplice in the disregard of House resolution in respect of Kubwa demolition exercise;
? Promoting a University education policy that negates provision of section 18(1)(c) of 1999 Constitution (Section 18(1) (c) deals with provision of free University education);
? Negating values emphasized by section 4(3); (Section 4(3) deals with the powers of the National Assembly to make laws for peace and good governance on matters contained in the exclusive legislative list)
? Promoting an economic policy that negates section 17(1)(a) of the Constitution; (Section 17(1)(a) deals with equality of the rights, obligations and opportunities before the law of every citizen)
? Privatisation policy that violates section 162(2) (c) and (d) as well as 15(5) of the Constitution; (section 162(2)(c) deals with proposing revenue allocation from the federation account while section 15(5) deals with the state abolishing corrupt practices and abuse of power)
? Violation of section 15(5) by employing two of his children and making his son a de facto Oil Minister; and
? Making Nasir el-Rufai the Federal Capital Territory Minister, which is unconstitutional.
After reading out the charges, Nadabo was asked by newsmen whether the offences he enumerated qualified as grievious constitutional breaches and he said \"there are more we can add if need be.\"

This is interesting to read. I\'m just going to quote part of the above:

There\'s no clarification of the \"Abuse of power\". Abuse of power in doing what? Sentenced someone to die by his own power or what? Next, what is wrong in giving loan to Sao Tome, Principe, and Ghana? Is it against Nigeria\'s constitution to have anything to do with those countries? If I understand this, we are talking about a loan not even a grant, which means it has to be paid back likely with interests.
I think the House of Assembly is making a mock of the impeachment power they have. It should not be an instrument for revenge rather they should use it for clear gross failure of the president. I am not saying that Obasanjo may not have done somethings wrong, but please put only what is relevant rather than feeding up the list with some blatant garbage. GIGO (Garbage-in, Garbage-out)
