Title: Amina Lawal having sex out of wedlock
Post by: chikaau on October 10, 2003, 07:42:39 PM
I was reading on the washington post the other day about Amina Lawal the woman who had sex out of wedlock. It happened that her case was overturned because the judges said that she was not given enough time explain herself. If the sentence had been carried out, the 32-year-old would have been the first woman stoned to death since 12 northern states first began adopting strict Islamic law, or Shariah, in 1999.

what do u guys think about the whole stoning law of sharia. with the whole civilization and technology, should such laws still be in existence and if so, should there be lesser punishments for such act?

i know it\'s immoral I would say for such a thing to happen say in traditional culture(back home in Africa) not werstern culture. But one does not know Amina\'s life so we can\'t really judge her with this or should we?[

I think that the stoning thing is SO ARCHAIC and brutal.  It should not take place ever as it traumatizes the people before killing.  Now, in the extreme case that the particular society believes its the best means of punishment, then the MAN must also be involved.

All through this controversial case, no one was even mentioning the man.  Did Amina get pregnant just like that?  Where on earth is the man?  They should go and fish him out...he also has calls to answer!  If Amina were to be stoned to death (which I really oppose), the man should as well.  That way, he won\'t feel free to go around embarrasing other women.  If that stoning took place, it would have been one shocking experience as a Nigerian 8O   What\'s very interesting is why doesn\'t the Federal Government seem interested in this whole Sharia thing?

laws are created based on what\'s happening and what people think is a just during the era in question.
However, i think it\'s time some of the sharia laws if it must be adopted be reviewed.

All those who were ready to cast the first stones... i hope they are all without SIN

Maybe sharia should not be totally abandoned for say religious reasons, however, it needs to be reviewed to accomodate the 21st century life style.

Truly though, who defines the the 21st century life style?  Whatever the case, the man needs to be given a few lessons.  It\'s kind of sad that the man is not even talked about.

that is so right................i never read or saw anything aboout this misterious man. i wonder what happened to him.

i know it\'s the 21st century but the way we see 21st century might not be the same way the people with the shariah law see it. U\'all should remem ber our family values from back home and what the elders and seniors ans the church in general back home from our villages consider immoral and stuff like that. i think it\'s the same way with the shariah law and i guess the really have strong traditions and moral ethics i think.
