Nigerian Election Commission Chooses BioLink Systems To Prevent Voter Fraud

BioLink Technologies International announced that the Nigerian Election Commission has selected its fingerprint identification system to register an estimated 60 million voters and prevent fraudulent multiple registrations. The entire voter population of Nigeria will be enrolled in the system over a 40-day period in preparation for presidential elections of April 2003.

The Authenteon template matching servers from BioLink will be used to store voters\' fingerprint templates, and to match each new template against all previously enrolled templates. The installation includes 456 BioLink Authenteon servers deployed at 37 voter registration sites corresponding with Nigeria\'s 37 states in configurations of three to 75 servers. The system can deliver more than 2.4 million fingerprint matches per second, and will make more than 4.7 trillion matches over the enrollment period.

\"We are confident that we are providing the Nigerian government with the most effective and affordable solution available today to dramatically reduce the potential fraud in the election process by ensuring the integrity of the \'one person, one vote\' concept,\" said Gene Chayevsky, BioLink president and CEO. \"The fact that our system was chosen after a thorough evaluation of competitive offerings demonstrates that BioLink can meet the needs of the most challenging civil ID implementations.\"

I am not sure this will make a difference. Knowing how elections are conducted back home.... it\'s all about who pays off the right people

Call me cynical but if the process of selection is skewed at source no amount of biometrics will rescue that process. Nigerians seems to have forgotten that the Nigerian passport was ‘biometric’ long before biological identification systems became trendy. Did the fingerprinting stop the fraud? What I find astonishing sometimes is the way human beings reify human created technologies. Did intensive agriculture solve the problem of global hunger like the proponents claimed? What about nuclear energy and the promised solution to world energy problems? People should wake up and smell the acrid coffee jo.
