From Gowon Akpodonor, Port Harcourt

Two late goals by the Super Eagles saw off the stiff challenge of the Panthers of Gabon in yesterday\'s World Cup qualifier played at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt, even as the rain, which started before kick-off, did not help the Eagles\' course.

It took the Eagles 83 minutes to break the deadlock. Julius Aghahowa headed in a Kanu Nwankwo pull out, while Kanu scored the second from Yakubu Aiyegbeni\'s pass. Obafemi Martins missed what could have been Nigeria\'s opening goal in the 60th minute after Aghahowa had forced a save from the Gabonese goalkeeper, Didier Ovono Ebang, in the 53rd minute.

The first half started with both sides trying to establish their dominance on the game. However, the first chance fell to the Panthers in the third minute. A Gabonese attacker failed to connect from a pull out from the left. Another ambitious shot from the visitors went wide. The Gabonese were not done yet as a pull out from the left was tipped over the cross bar by Vincent Enyeama.
